The World’s Largest Textile Garage Sale is an event unlike any other in my area, drawing fiber enthusiasts from far and wide. For many, it’s the highlight of their year—a chance to snag incredible deals while supporting a great cause. All the proceeds go to the MN Textile Center, which is doing fantastic work in the community. People and businesses generously donate vast quantities of fabric, yarn, thread, tools, patterns, and more. It’s a treasure trove for anyone who loves textiles, and best of all, none of this material ends up in landfills.
What makes this event truly special is how accessible it is. Artists, students, and hobbyists can find amazing materials at rock-bottom prices. And if you’re quick, you can score even better deals during the final-hour bag sale. For just $2, you can fill a paper bag with whatever fits inside. After that, leftover items are donated to schools and nonprofits. They’ve really nailed the concept of sustainability here.
This year, I got lucky and happened to visit just as they were setting up. I thought I’d give you a sneak peek of what’s coming your way. When I stopped by, there was still a full day left to sort through all the donations. Trust me, it’s a massive haul—worth over $50,000 in materials. Let’s dive in!
The sale takes place in a cavernous warehouse, and I’d say about a quarter of the space is dedicated to fabrics. There’s an unbelievable variety: cotton, linen, wool, silk, denim, corduroy, knits, fleece, flannel, polyester—you name it. It’s like walking into a textile wonderland.
Another quarter of the space is packed with yarns. From acrylic to cashmere, there’s something for every project. You’ll also find books, magazines, and sewing patterns filling up another significant chunk of the area. And don’t forget the silent auction section, where you can bid on high-end items like sewing machines, sergers, and weaving looms.
I couldn’t believe the sheer volume of materials available. It’s overwhelming in the best possible way. If you’ve ever dreamed of starting a new project but been held back by cost, this is your chance. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just getting started, you’ll find plenty to inspire you.
