We absolutely adore Mire’s take on the Strasbourg Henley. It's fascinating to see how a single pattern can transform depending on the fabric chosen. Whether it's the weight, texture, or even the print, every variation brings something unique to the table.
Whenever I’m planning my sewing projects, one of the most exciting parts is finding examples of others who have sewn the same pattern. This helps me visualize how different fabrics can alter the final outcome. A pattern might look completely different depending on whether you use a woven or a knit, a solid color or a bold print, and so much more.
Mire has done an incredible job showcasing the versatility of the Strasbourg Henley by making three distinct versions. For her first version, she used a printed jersey knit in a small size. The large-scale print allowed her to play around with pattern placement, creating a striking vertical line that draws attention upward toward the face. However, the bold print somewhat diminishes the visibility of the button placket, which becomes less prominent in this version. Although the fit of the bodice and sleeves was decent, there were some unwanted drag lines across the chest area. To address this, Mire decided to go up a size for her next version.
In the second version, Mire opted for a medium size and chose another jersey print. The larger size not only eliminated the drag lines but also gave the garment a better overall fit. While this print was similarly large-scale, it had less open space, which meant the pattern placement didn't have as dramatic an effect. Similar to the first version, the buttons and placket faded into the background as design elements. This version proved to be incredibly versatile for layering, allowing her to wear it casually or dress it up depending on the occasion. It also provided extra coverage when needed, making it suitable for more conservative settings.
The third and final version of the Strasbourg Henley features a solid rib knit in a lightweight sweater material. Unlike the prints, the solid fabric highlights the placket beautifully, even with matching buttons. The design detail draws the eye upward, creating a flattering frame for the face. The sweater knit gives the garment a more relaxed and casual vibe compared to the jerseys. If you stumbled upon these two henleys hanging side by side in a store, you’d never guess they were made from the same pattern!
So, how often do you experiment with sewing the same pattern in various fabrics? Do you prefer sticking to color changes or do you enjoy pushing boundaries by selecting entirely different materials? Let us know in the comments below!
