A method for producing expanded beads, comprising: a base resin and a colorant containing a polypropylene resin and having a tensile modulus of at least 1,200 MPa, and a thermoplastic polymer having a tensile modulus lower than that of the base resin The mixture is kneaded to form a kneaded mixture, a matrix comprising the base resin in the kneaded mixture, and a plurality of domains each distributed in the matrix and containing the thermoplastic polymer and the colorant. The kneaded mixture is formed into resin pellets, and then the resin pellets are surface-modified by treating the resin pellets with an organic peroxide. The foamed and expanded surface-modified resin pellets give expanded beads having an inner zone surrounded by a skin zone. The melting temperature of the high temperature peak in the surface region is lower than that in the inner layer region.
